Persian Rugs & More is an Oriental Rug Store that sells all types of
hand made, high quality carpets. We have hand woven rugs,
hand-hooked rugs, durries  (sometimes referred to as kilims), and we
also have hand tufted rugs.

Hand woven rugs are hand made on a loom, with the wool being knotted
around the warp one knot at a time.  It takes a team of 4 people, working
three shifts a day for 6 months to make one 8 x 10 rug.  This combined
with the size of the knot and the difficulty of the pattern determines
the cost of the rug.

Hand woven rugs come in several types, in our store we carry primarily
the single and double knot.  The Pakistani and Indian Bokhara rugs that
are much thinner and shinier are single knotted and therefore do not
contain as much wool and usually do not cost as much. Because they
contain less wool they are also much lighter.

People will want to see the back of the rug. This is because the best
test of how well a rug is made is to try to determine the knot count.
The higher the knot count the better the rug is made and the sharper
the image is on top.  Knot size can vary from what we call the 9-9's to
up to several thousand per inch.  We have for general daily use in the
home from 90 to around 350 knots per square inch (ksi). As a general
rule the Indian rugs have the lowest knot count, then the Chinese, the
Pakistani and finally the Persian rugs.  The Persian rugs may not
always have the best knot count, but they are the only rugs we carry
that will appreciate in value as they get older.  The others may retain
their value, but Persian rugs GO UP and that is why many people prefer
them.  This is not an opinion and much documentation exists to support
this fact. They seem to last for almost an eternity. We have customers
bring in rugs from time to time to be repaired that have been in their
families for several generations.

Hand-Hooked Rugs are rugs that have a knobby look that people have
in living rooms and bedrooms primarily. They are usually made of wool
and sometimes cotton. They usually have a backing on the back to
hold the wool in place. These are not as expensive as the
hand-knotted. Most of they time they are made in China.

Kilims or Durries are hand woven rugs as well, but not as intricately
knotted as the hand woven wool rugs.  They are reversible, and very
durable.  People often buy them for kitchens, dens, porches, etc. At this
point I should also mention that we have a product called a soumak
that is in the piles with the hand woven rugs. They too are reversible,
but fall in the quality range between the durries and the hand woven.
We were asked to carry them because they are an excellent floor
covering for people with allergies.  They have little fuzz coming off of
them.

Our rugs are primarily wool on a cotton wrap, but we do have 2 silk on
silk and several that are primarily wool on cotton with silk in varying
amounts woven in.  You will be able to recognize this with time.
